Why I Stopped Reaching for Petroleum Jelly for Dry Lips

I've had dry, chapped lips for as long as I can remember.

Growing up, the answer was always the same. Reach for the little tub of petroleum jelly, put some on and hope my lips felt better.

And it did help. But years later, as I started paying much closer attention to the ingredients in the products my family and I used every day, I began looking at that familiar little tub differently.

I started asking a simple question: what am I actually putting on my lips?

That question eventually became part of the story behind Mantra Bee.

Does petroleum jelly actually moisturise dry lips?

Petroleum jelly is an occlusive. In simple terms, it forms a barrier over the skin that helps reduce moisture loss. That can be useful, particularly when skin needs protection from the elements.

But an occlusive barrier and the kind of nourishing lip balm I wanted to use are not quite the same thing.

The more I learned about ingredients, the less comfortable I became with petroleum jelly.

Petroleum jelly is derived from petroleum, and while highly refined cosmetic-grade petrolatum is widely used in skincare, it simply no longer aligned with what I wanted for myself or, eventually, for Mantra Bee.

I wanted to reach for ingredients such as beeswax, lanolin, botanical oils and butters instead. Ingredients I felt good about choosing, in a product I genuinely wanted to use every day.

That decision became part of a much bigger philosophy: being more thoughtful about what I put on my body, how products are made and what they leave behind.

Why beeswax?

Beeswax became an important part of our lip balm formula because it helps create a protective layer over the lips while giving the balm its structure.

It also made sense for Mantra Bee. Bees are woven into our name, our imagery and our philosophy of recognising the relationship between personal wellbeing and the natural world.

Why lanolin?

Lanolin is one of those ingredients that has been used for generations, and there is a reason it remains popular in lip care. It has a rich, comforting feel and helps soften and protect dry lips.

For Mantra Bee, choosing ingredients is not about following whatever happens to be fashionable. It is about creating products that feel beautiful to use and make sense within the formula.

Then come the plant oils and butters

Our lip balm base brings together sweet almond oil, coconut oil, shea butter, rosehip seed oil and jojoba oil, along with vitamin E.

Each contributes something slightly different to the texture and feel of the finished balm. Together with beeswax and lanolin, they create the smooth, substantial balm I had wanted all those years ago.

And because scent can turn something as ordinary as applying lip balm into a tiny ritual, most of our blends are finished with pure essential oil combinations. For those who prefer no scent at all, we also make an unscented blend.

The packaging mattered too

Once I had a lip balm I loved, there was another question I couldn't ignore: why did something used up so quickly need to leave behind a plastic tube?

That is why Mantra Bee lip balms come in chunky paper tubes instead.

They are deliberately different from the little plastic tubes most of us grew up with. The packaging is part of the product, not an afterthought, because I believe self-care should nurture both you and the Earth.

A small question that became something much bigger

The more I learned about ingredients, the more intentional I became about what I wanted to put on my own body.

For my lips, that meant moving away from petroleum jelly and choosing beeswax, lanolin, botanical oils and butters instead. I wanted beautiful botanical blends. I wanted packaging that didn't leave another little piece of plastic behind.

That childhood frustration with dry lips eventually became one of the many small ideas behind Mantra Bee.

Today, every paper tube still carries that philosophy: thoughtful ingredients, a little everyday ritual and less unnecessary waste.
